Chapter 22

Dante

I made a motion with my hand that had Luca taking his group of made men around the back of the building. Pulling my gun out of my suit pants, I prepared to enter the building. I’d taken to dressing like the others when we went out so that none of us stood out to any potential witnesses.

We’d scoped out the address Willy had given me beforehand and there were only two exits. Ciro and I would be taking a handful of soldiers in the front while Luca and the others came in the back entrance. We’d pin down anyone inside.

I didn’t like that we didn’t have more time to recon the building and those inside, but we’d handle whatever we had to. Time was almost up on the clock and I needed to find Rafe before the countdown stopped.

An uneasy feeling kept nagging at me, telling me I shouldn’t have brought Carmela with us. She was safely parked in the car a few blocks away on a busy street. She was probably safer there than alone at the house. The twins might eventually try something if I kept leaving her at Nico’s home unguarded. I couldn’t bear the thought of her getting hurt. Now that I had her I wasn’t about to let anything happen.

I focused on the task at hand. That dark part of me was ripping at my insides, trying to loosen the hold I had on it. I’d be quenching its bloodlust soon enough.

Ciro crept up behind the single guard posted at the door and dispatched the man. I wondered if it was arrogance or ignorance on the part of The East Disciples? Had George gotten my message? Either way, death was coming for them today.

Inside, the building was gloomy and industrial lights flickered and buzzed. We made our way through and I realized exactly what Willy had given us. This was the gang’s home—or at least it was for now.

We’d checked into the Disciples on the ride over. These weren’t A-list gangsters. They were cobbled together from the leftovers of other street gangs that had been arrested or wiped out. They tended to take in kids off the street. Not young kids—Rafe never should have been on their radar. They took in older teens who had nowhere to go. They initiated them into the gang and used them to push their drugs. The soldiers for the gang were its older members.

It was unusual for a gang to have a centralized place like this where most of its members lived. I glanced into a room as we passed. There were cots and bunk beds everywhere, but no one was inside.

I wasn’t sure how many would be here. It was early afternoon. Hopefully, they were out doing whatever the fuck The Disciples had them do during the day. I had no interest in killing eighteen and nineteen-year-olds. I’d do it if they challenged me, but they weren’t who I was here for.

We moved quickly, checking each room as we went.
